Examinations
You should have an eye examination every
two years (especially important if you are a driver); it will
take about 25 minutes. A standard examination may cover the following
areas:
- Discuss your needs - covering any problems you
may be having, for how long and how any changes to your vision
have taken place.
- Review your medical history - both visual and other medical
history.
- Eye examination - both internally and externally
to establish the general health of your eyes and identify any
underlying problems.
- Your vision - measurements will be taken
when you are not wearing any spectacles or contact lenses to
establish if any vision correction is required.
- Eye movement and co-ordination
- to ensure your eyes are working together.
- Lifestyle - additional information regarding
your work and leisure activities will help us to make an accurate
assessment of your needs.
- Stereoscopic acuity - mainly used with children,
this helps in the detection of Amblyopia ('lazy eyes').
- Refraction - the prescription determination
includes objective tests (optician observes results) and subjective
tests (you say what you can see).
Repair
In the event of breakages, we can offer
a speedy emergency repair service. Please note that some repairs
can take an appreciable time due to the availability of component
parts, particularly bifocal and special lenses.
Choosing
the right Frames
Pale complexion
try: Lightweight metal frames or frames with a hint of
colour, such as rose or amber. Tortoise shell frames are an option,
as long as they are not too dark.
avoid: Clear crystal frames, which can be too colourless,
also blue and green tinged frames tend to drain the colour from
pale complexions.
Dark complexion
try: Silver, gold or clear frames also burgundy and brown
colours can enhance your features.
avoid: Black, which can be too heavy.
Black complexion
try: All metallic frames and amber colours.
avoid: Depending on style black is either wonderful or
awful. Colours rarely contribute to overall style unless bright,
fun or specially chosen to work with a particular outfit.
Oval faces
try: Just about any frame, but especially angular or rounded
aviators and modern small, geometric styles.
avoid: Large, old-fashioned styles.
Round faces
try: Slimming styles. Elongated shapes work well as long
as they are not too shallow. Square and up-swept styles can help
to highlight the upper face.
avoid: Small and round or very large shapes which make
the face look even rounder.
Long faces
try: Wider frames that counter the faces narrowness. Frames
with a strong 'top line' or rounded 'owl' styles can work well.
avoid: Small, square styles.
Help
& FAQ
How long should a sight test take?
It depends on who the patient is. A young, healthy person with
no apparent problems will take about 20 minutes. Someone older
perhaps with high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma or other
ailments can take much longer.
Is an optometrist the same as an optician?
An optometrist is qualified to test your eyes. Some dispensing
opticians have extra qualifications that enable them to fit contact
lenses and carry out certain clinical tests.
Can I sleep in my contact lenses?
Sleeping in your lenses can be hazardous as it can lead to infection
or damage to the cornea (front window of the eye).
I'm a diabetic. Does that make a difference?
Yes diabetes can cause severe problems with your sight. It is
very important that your eyes are checked every year, preferably
with drops to dilate the pupil, so that the retina (back of the
eye) can be examined thoroughly.
Driving and your eyesight
The minimum legal requirement for motorists is to be able to read
a number plate from a distance of 20.5 meters (67 feet) and have
a 120-degree wide field of view. For drivers, the importance of
having a regular eye examination (at least every two years) is
obvious, particularly bearing in mind that people's eyesight changes
over time.
Corporate Services
In the working environment of today, given the ever-increasing
expectations for efficiency and performance, good vision is critical
to ensuring the ability to produce results.
VDU's and your eyes
While there is no reliable evidence to suggest that long-term
intensive use of VDU's is damaging to the eye's, it is true that
VDU users tend to complain more of eye strain. In addition to
VDU's, unsuitable lighting, poorly designed work areas and insufficient
rest periods can all lead to eye fatigue.
- Take frequent breaks
- Adjust your screen to a level
you feel comfortable with
- Avoid screen reflection
Frames
From basic traditional styles at affordable
prices to modern and innovative frames that offer the latest materials,
fashions and levels of comfort, we've got them all, including
an exciting range of kids frames.
Your new spectacles will look more attractive if they incorporate
hi-index lenses and special coatings.
Hi-index lenses are much slimmer than standard ones, and are particularly
suited for people with strong prescriptions. Anti-reflection coatings
significantly reduce the light reflected from lenses, making your
eyes more visible as well as giving you better vision.
Choosing the best frames to suit you and your facial features
is not always easy. Our frames
Guide will help you to narrow down the choice.
We believe that looking good should be affordable, so you'll
find our prices are as attractive as our frames.
